The Blessing I Never Saw in the Atonement

I Thought the Atonement Was Only for After I Failed

There are some things you read that don't just teach you something new.

They rearrange something inside of you.

That happened to me this morning.

For most of my life, I think I have viewed the Atonement as God's rescue plan.

The place I run after I've messed up.

After I've said something I wish I could take back.

After I've made the wrong choice.

After my heart has broken into pieces I wasn't sure could ever fit back together.

The Atonement was the remedy.

And it is.

But today I learned it is so much more.

As I studied, I came across a thought I had never really considered before.

The author described the Atonement as having a motivational power.

Not just the power to cleanse us after we sin, but the power to help us choose differently before we ever do.

I actually stopped reading for a minute.

Because I had never thought of the Atonement that way.

What if the quiet desire you have to be kinder today isn't just because you're trying harder?

What if the strength you suddenly feel to forgive someone who hurt you isn't simply your own determination?

What if that little whisper telling you to stay, to pray, to apologize, to walk away from temptation, to choose patience instead of frustration, is actually the Savior's Atonement already working in your life?

That thought settled deep into my heart.

So many of us spend our lives carrying around the weight of not being enough.

We tell ourselves we'll finally come to Christ after we get it together.

After we're stronger.

After we're more disciplined.

After we've stopped making the same mistakes.

But maybe we've misunderstood Him all along.

Maybe He isn't just waiting for us at the finish line.

Maybe He has been walking beside us the whole way, quietly giving us the desire to keep taking the next right step.

When I look back over my own life, I can see it now.

There were moments when choosing obedience cost me something. Going back to the temple changed relationships that mattered deeply to me. There were sacrifices I never imagined making. There were tears, lonely nights, and moments when I wondered if I was strong enough to keep choosing the covenant path.

I used to think I was simply trying harder.

Now I wonder if I wasn't trying harder at all.

Maybe I was simply responding to the quiet pull of the Savior.

The pages I studied compared His influence to gravity.

You can't always see gravity, but you certainly experience it. It is always there, constantly pulling.

That image has stayed with me all day.

Christ is always drawing us toward Him.

Always.

Not through fear.

Not through shame.

Not by forcing us.

But through love.

I think about the father of the prodigal son. He didn't stand on the porch with crossed arms waiting to lecture his son. He ran toward him. Before a speech was finished. Before restitution had been made. Before everything had been cleaned up.

That is how the Savior has always been.

His arms have always been open.

His invitation has always been extended.

And perhaps one of the greatest blessings of the Atonement is not only that it cleanses us after we fall, but that it gently strengthens us before we do.

Maybe the desire you have to become a little more like Him today isn't evidence of your willpower.

Maybe it's evidence that He is already drawing you closer.

What a beautiful thought.

The Atonement is not just the place we run when we've failed.

It is the quiet, steady power helping us become the person we've been praying to be, one gentle invitation at a time.
