But If Not: When Faith Is Bigger Than the Outcome

June 01, 20264 min read

There is a phrase in scripture that has followed me through some of the hardest seasons of my life.

Just three simple words.

"But if not." (Daniel 3:18)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood before a fiery furnace with complete confidence that God could save them.

They believed in miracles.

They believed in God's power.

They believed He could intervene.

But then they said something remarkable.

"But if not..."

Even if the miracle didn't come.

Even if the answer wasn't what they hoped.

Even if the outcome looked different than they imagined.

They would still trust Him.

I think about those words often.

Because faith is easy when everything unfolds the way we prayed it would.

Faith feels natural when the diagnosis improves.

When the relationship heals.

When the child comes back.

When the door opens.

When the miracle arrives right on schedule.

But what about when it doesn't?

What about when the answer is silence?

What about when the waiting stretches longer than we thought we could endure?

What about when the thing we have pleaded for remains unchanged?

I've had times where I spent hours on my knees asking heaven to move a mountain.

Perhaps you've been there too.

The kind of prayer that comes from a place so deep you can barely find words.

The kind that keeps you awake at night.

The kind that leaves tears on your pillow.

And somewhere in that wrestling, I had to decide something.

I had to decide that the Lord knew what was best.

My prayers slowly changed.

Instead of asking, "Will You answer my prayer?"

They became,

"Lord, if this is what is needed, if this is part of my story, if I am meant to stay here a little longer, I will accept it."

Not because I understood it.

Not because I liked it.

Not because it stopped hurting.

But because I trusted Him.

There is a difference.

Sometimes we think faith means believing we will get the outcome we want.

But I have learned that faith is not confidence in an outcome.

Faith is confidence in God.

One of the most difficult lessons of discipleship is learning that trust and understanding are not the same thing. We often want both.

We want the answer and the explanation.

Yet many times God simply asks for trust.

For each of us, faith is a choice.

Every day we choose whether we will rely solely on our own strength, allow fear to write the story, or lean into the Savior's invitation to trust Him.

I have discovered that peace came the moment I stopped demanding certainty and started choosing trust.

Not perfect trust.

Not fearless trust.

Just trust.

The kind that says:

"I believe You can."

"I hope You will."

"But if not, I will still follow You."

I wish I could tell you that faith makes challenges disappear.

It doesn't.

The furnace still feels hot.

The waiting still feels long.

The grief still feels real.

The unanswered questions still exist.

But faith changes who walks through those challenges with us.

Now when difficulties come, I don't immediately look for the exit... I look for Jesus.

Because I know something I didn't always know.

I can make it through hard things as long as I have faith in Him.

Even if the answer I hoped for never comes.

Even if the miracle looks different than I imagined.

Even if God's timing feels confusing.

As I stay close to Him, He gives me what I need.

Not always what I want.

But always what I need.

And every time I choose trust over fear, my faith grows a little stronger.

Perhaps that's the miracle He is working most often.

Not changing our circumstances.

Changing us.

So today, if you're carrying a prayer that feels heavy, if you're waiting for an answer that hasn't come, if you're standing in front of your own fiery furnace, remember this:

God is still God.

He is still good.

He is still present.

And even when life doesn't unfold the way we hoped, we can choose to say:

"But if not, I will trust Him anyway."

That kind of faith has carried me through more than I thought I could survive.

And I believe it will carry you too.
