When God’s Answer Looks Different Than the One You Wanted

May 01, 20263 min read

There’s a kind of prayer I think many of us have prayed before.

It usually sounds very spiritual on the outside.

“Heavenly Father, please show me what to do.”

But if we were painfully honest… sometimes what we really mean is:

“Please tell me to do the thing I already want to do.”

I say that with a little bit of a wince because I’ve been there recently.

I have knelt in prayer asking God for direction while quietly holding onto my own preferred outcome with both hands. I had already written the ending in my mind. I knew how I wanted the relationship to heal. I knew how I wanted certain family situations to unfold. I knew what I hoped God would say.

And when His answer felt slower, quieter, or different than what I wanted… I felt frustrated.

Confused.

Maybe even a little heartbroken.

Perhaps you’ve been there too.

You’re praying about a relationship that feels complicated.
You’re waiting for a prodigal child to come back.
You’re trying to make a career decision.
You’re wondering if you should stay, leave, fight harder, let go, hold on.

And the hardest part?

Sometimes heaven feels quiet while your heart feels loud.

I’ve learned something in this season that has humbled me deeply:

Both our heart and our obedience matter to God.

We can outwardly obey while inwardly resisting.

We can attend church, say the prayers, read the scriptures, and still quietly be negotiating with God in our hearts.

“I’ll trust You… if You fix this.”

“I’ll surrender… if Your answer matches mine.”

“I’ll obey… but only if it doesn’t cost too much.”

Oof. I’ve caught myself there more than once.

Recently I found myself sitting in the temple carrying questions I desperately wanted answered. I wanted certainty. I wanted relief. Honestly, I wanted God to confirm my timeline and my desired outcome.

Instead, I felt a very different invitation settle into my heart:

Would you trust Me if I write this story differently than you would?

I wish I could tell you I immediately said yes with perfect faith.

I didn’t.

I cried.

I wrestled.

I grieved what I thought my life would look like.

But somewhere in that sacred wrestle, I remembered Jesus Christ in Gethsemane.

“Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

That prayer was not spoken from ease. It was spoken from surrender.

And I think many of us are being invited into that same holy surrender.

I also think about Nephi leaving Jerusalem without knowing exactly where the journey would lead. Or Abraham being asked to leave what was familiar.

God often gives enough light for the next step, not the whole staircase.

And if you’re struggling to discern His direction right now, maybe your next step is simpler than you think.

Turn off the noise.

Put your phone down.

Go to the temple.

Fast.

Pray differently.

Open your scriptures before asking everyone else what they think.

Write down this question in your journal:

What am I trying to control that belongs to God?

Then ask:

What is one act of obedience I know God has already asked of me?

Start there.

Not next year.

Not when it feels easier.

Today.

I can testify that surrender has never looked glamorous in my life. It has looked like tears in temple parking lots. It has looked like showing up to church alone sometimes. It has looked like releasing timelines I desperately wanted to force.

But every single time I have surrendered my prideful desires to God, He has replaced them with peace I could not create on my own.

Not always immediate answers.

But peace.

And sometimes that peace is the answer.

If you’re waiting for direction today, take the next faithful step you do know.

God is far better at writing stories than we are.

And I’m learning, slowly but surely, that His version is always worth trusting.
