When a Picture Became a Prayer
Sometimes a picture is more than just a picture.
Sometimes it quietly invites you to stop.
As I look at this image of Hoover Dam illuminated in red, white, and blue with our nation's flag shining across it, I find myself lingering a little longer. It reminds me of the generations who came before us. People whose names we may never know. People who sacrificed, served, and believed in something bigger than themselves. They planted seeds of freedom they would never fully see grow.
It made me wonder what kind of seeds I am planting.
As America celebrates 250 years, my heart is filled with gratitude.
Not because our country has always gotten everything right.
It hasn't.
None of us have.
But because I believe God has always worked through imperfect people who are willing to keep turning their hearts toward Him.
I think that's still our invitation today.
In a world that often feels divided, perhaps God is asking us to become people who build instead of tear down.
People who choose compassion instead of criticism.
People who listen before they speak.
People who love even when it's hard.
It's easy to become discouraged when we focus on everything that seems broken. The headlines can leave us feeling hopeless. Conversations can become arguments. Fear can begin to sound louder than faith.
But discipleship has always looked different.
Jesus didn't ask us to fix the whole world. He asked us to love the person in front of us. To forgive. To serve. To become peacemakers.
Those quiet, ordinary choices may never make the news, but I believe they change homes, communities, and eventually generations.
That is the America I want to help build.
As I looked at this image, it became more than a patriotic display.
It became a prayer.
A prayer for our leaders. A prayer for our military, first responders, and all those who quietly serve. A prayer for families carrying heavy burdens. A prayer that we would remember who we are and, even more importantly, whose we are.
Freedom is one of God's greatest gifts because it gives us the ability to choose.
Today, I choose gratitude.
I choose hope.
I choose to believe that God is still working.
That light still overcomes darkness.
That kindness still matters.
And that He is not finished with America, or with any one of us.
Happy 250th Birthday, America.
May we honor those who came before us by becoming people of faith, courage, and love for those who come after us.
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." Psalm 33:12
