When God Doesn't Change the Outcome
There are questions that comfort us.
Then there are questions that undo us.
This was one of them.
"I know you have the faith to be healed, but do you have the faith not to be healed?"
I still remember the first time I really let those words settle into my heart. I wanted to push them away. I wanted to argue with them. Because when you're lying awake in the middle of the night, wondering what tomorrow will bring, that's not the question you want to answer.
When I was sick, this became one of the hardest questions I had to ask myself.
At the time, my prayers were desperate.
"Please heal me."
I prayed them over and over. I searched for answers. I changed my diet. I researched treatments. I cried more tears than I care to admit. Every morning I woke up hoping today would be the day my body would feel different.
I had faith that God could heal me.
I never questioned His power.
But somewhere in the middle of all of it, I felt Him asking a different question.
Amber... if healing doesn't come the way you're asking, will you still trust Me?
That question felt impossible.
Because I wasn't just asking God to restore my health. I was asking Him to restore my future. My plans. The life I thought I was supposed to have.
Maybe that's where you find yourself today.
Perhaps it isn't illness.
Maybe you're praying for your marriage to heal, but the distance still feels just as wide.
Maybe you're praying for a child to come back to God.
Maybe you're asking for the relationship to be restored, the financial burden to lift, the anxiety to quiet, or the loneliness to finally end.
And heaven feels... quiet.
It's easy to trust God when the miracle arrives.
It's much harder to trust Him while you're still waiting for it.
I've learned that faith isn't measured only by believing God can change our circumstances.
Sometimes it's measured by believing He is still good when our circumstances haven't changed.
I wish I could tell you I answered that question perfectly.
I didn't.
There were days I wrestled. Days I questioned. Days I wondered why my prayers seemed to stop at the ceiling.
But somewhere in that waiting, something unexpected happened.
God was healing something deeper than my body.
He was healing my need to control every outcome.
He was healing my fear that unanswered prayers meant I had been forgotten.
He was healing the part of me that believed His love depended on whether He said yes.
Looking back now, I can see that healing came. My body was restored in ways I never thought possible.
But the greater miracle may have been what happened before that.
My heart learned to surrender.
I stopped asking, "Can I trust God only if He gives me what I want?"
And I began asking, "Can I trust Him because of who He is?"
There's a difference.
One kind of faith depends on the outcome.
The other depends on the Savior.
If you're still waiting today, I hope you know this.
Waiting is not evidence that God has stepped away.
Silence is not the same as absence.
He is still beside you.
Still writing your story.
Still working in places you cannot yet see.
And perhaps.. just perhaps, while you're asking Him to change your circumstances... He is quietly changing your heart.
One day you may look back, as I have, and realize that His greatest miracle wasn't only what He healed.
It was who you became while you waited.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Proverbs 3:5-6
